Meet the mushroom

The Turkey Tail mushroom, named for its characteristic colourful stripes that resemble a turkey’s tail, is a powerful functional mushroom which may support immune and gut health. It is also rich in antioxidants and may improve athletic performance.

Turkey Tail has a very mild, light earthy taste.

Polysaccharides are a long chain of carbohydrate molecules known for their nutritional value and possibly supporting the immune system (1). Turkey Tail contains two particularly interesting polysaccharides, PSK and PSP. PSK may help strengthen the immune system, whilst PSP may act as a prebiotic to modulate the microbiome composition in the intestine (2). Turkey Tail has been shown to be one of the highest sources of beta-d-glucans. Beta-d-glucans have numerous benefits for our immune system; they may be able to assist in modulating our immune system.

The compounds in Turkey Tail may help balance our gut bacteria. A human clinical study found that the polysaccharide PSP has prebiotic properties, which can help balance the levels of healthy bacteria in the intestine and regulate the gut microbiome. (3)

Turkey Tail has been used for centuries in Traditional Chinese Medicine, at least as early as the 15th Century, to promote general health, vitality and longevity. In Japan, it’s known as the ‘cloud mushroom’ due to its resemblance to swirling clouds, symbolising longevity, health, spiritual attunement and infinity.
